Consulting must be approached carefully to ensure proper legal and moral approaches to problem solving. All legality must be adhered to at all times. Theoretical and practical issues arise to form a fine line that must be understood by the consultant to properly address the situation called upon. In some ways counseling and psychotherapy approaches can also be incorporated.

Complex theoretical issues arise when consulting for professional situations. Keeping the utmost of privacy when getting briefed and throughout operations of the consulting contract is important. There also have to be resistance to self-involve too much in the process. Maintaining fluent discourse without injecting of one’s own situation and past experience is important for addressing each consulting relationship. Empirical research should be the utmost director of proceedings and never by personal opinion aside from professional vision.

Practical issues arise during consultant including conflicts of interest. The consultant has to be objective at all times. Using proper methodology to arise at solutions can help expedite a process but must be observed carefully to not overlook paths towards problem solving that speed can overlook during proceedings. Selecting the appropriate criteria in each situation and defining a good program for action are two crucial steps that may involve psychoanalysis to devise problem solving methods. Approaching the decision making model correctly determines the success of the outcome of consulting.

Day defines three basic branches of ethics. The first is metaethics which he defines as the study of the nature of ethics. Metaethics includes the large scale observance of ethical behavior. The second branch of ethics is normative ethics referring to developing general theories and principles of moral conduct. The third aspect is applied ethics which includes problem solving and philosophy. These three approaches help us group discussions characterizing ethics.

Day then goes on defining ethical communication. The key point is that we must examine the motives and determining the consequences of the message. It is essential that we must have an ethical education to examine and interpret critical messages. It is important to preserve a sense of common right and wrong and consider the effects of the messages we communicate.

Day defines the goals of a course in media ethics is one that should stimulate the moral imagination of the reader, recognize ethical issues, and develop analytical skills and develop ethical fitness
